چکیده

Sangeeta Gupta, J. D. Callen and C. C. Hegna Department of Engineering Physics, University of Wisconsin, Madison, WI 53706-1687 (Dated: July 8, 2004) Abstract Eigenmode analysis of a magnetic-shear-localized ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) interchange instability in the presence of plasma compressibility indicates the marginal stability criterion (DI = 1/4) is not affected by the compressibility effects. Above the marginal stability criterion, plasma compressibility reduces the growth rate of ideal interchange instability. Including compressibility effects, robust shear-localized ideal MHD instabilities require DI & 3/4, a factor of about 3 above the usual Suydam/Mercier instability criterion (DI > 1/4).

Magnetic-diffusion-driven shear instability of solar flux tubes

The dynamics of the partially ionized solar photosphere and chromosphere can be described by a set of equations that are structurally similar to the magnetohydrodynamic equations, except now the magnetic field is no longer frozen in the fluid but slips through it due to non-ideal magnetohydrodynamic effects which are manifested as Ohm, ambipolar and Hall diffusion. Macroscopic gas motions are w...

Variational Approach to Nonlinear Gravity-driven Instabilities in a Mhd Setting

Abstract. We establish a variational framework for nonlinear instabilities in a setting of the ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations. We apply a variational method to various kind of smooth steady states which are shown to be nonlinearly unstable for both incompressible and compressible ideal MHD equations. Destabilizing effect of compressibility is justified as well as stabilizing effect o...

Magnetohydrodynamic equilibrium and stability of rotating plasmas in a mirror geometry

Abstract A systematic study of equilibrium and stability of rotating plasmas in a mirror geometry is presented. At supersonic azimuthal rotation velocities, centrifugal forces lead to equilibria with nearly detached plasmas, where the plasma mass concentrates at the mirror center. However, isolation of the plasma from the ends is not complete due to high parallel thermal conduction. Temperature...

Production and study of high-beta plasma confined by a superconducting dipole magnet

The Levitated Dipole Experiment (LDX) [J. Kesner, et al. in Fusion Energy 1998 3, 1165 (1999)] is a new research facility that is exploring the confinement and stability of plasma created within the dipole field produced by a strong superconducting magnet. Unlike other configurations in which stability depends on curvature and magnetic shear, magnetohydrodynamic stability of a dipole derives fr...

On Magnetohydrodynamic Stability in the Low Pressure Limit

The stability of arbitrary toroidal magnetohydrostatic equilibria is investigated near the limit of a vacuum magnetic field. Nonsingular expansions in powers of ß ~ p/B2 are considered to all orders. Order by order minimization of the energy variaiton shows that any orders are positive semidefinite in the nullspace of all lower orders if either the vacuum field has shear or (for an identically ...
